Back with a vengeance

8bb’s late summer hibernation is almost at an end, so it is time to fire up the blog for another year of entertaining, frustrating, ridiculous and hopefully not too educational hijinks from six new music-crazed Chicago-ians.

And it will be an exciting, if completely nuts, year. I feel like I am quoting from an advertisement: “Not only do you get five huge new world premieres. You will also tour and perform for the first time with microphones, a sound technician and a whole multimedia setup. Then, for absolutely no extra money, we will give you a brand new Chicago series that you will have to build from the ground up. This will be in a prominent venue, and feature some fabulous ‘associate artist’ talent. But wait, there’s more, we will also throw in two new important residencies at prominent universities in the midwest.”

When I first joined 8bb last August, other members would often talk about the importance of moving the ensemble “to the next level”. To be honest, I really had no idea what that actually meant (it sounded a little like “think outside the box”-style corporate-speak to me), but with all the myriad challenges of 2007-08, this season does seems a perfect opportunity for 8bb to increase its national and international profile and the musical and multimedia flexibility of the ensemble. Which seems bloody great.

So bring it on, baby.
