Last night we performed on Live from WFMT. Kerry was great, and we had a small number of enthusiastic fans there to cheer us on — thanks to all of you who came! Today it’s off to Laramie for a four day residency at the University of Wyoming. We’ll come back from that and take the weekend off, then next week is all about preparing for our Harris concert on Feb 19th and the Ojai Festival June 11-14th. I know, strange to be preparing for two things so far apart, but we’ve got guests coming in with whom we’re collaborating both next week and in June, so it makes sense to hit all that rep now.
And I haven’t mentioned the fun trip to Atlanta we made last weekend — wow, that was an organized presenter. Bailey Center, you rock. In particular, the master class was extremely well attended, and like FSU the previous week, at a very high level. It also produced the line of the week, courtesy of our own Michael Maccaferri (note how I spelled that, Tim?). Here’s how it came up:
Matt: “What stroke are you using for that scale?”
C. (very game, talented KSU freshman): “Just short, kind of off the string.”
Matt: “Can you show me?”
[C. demonstrates nice brush stroke]
Matt: “Try it on the string.”
[C. tries again with reasonable detaché]
Matt: “Try it again, with more bow.”
[C. again, with more bow]
Matt: “I don’t know, something — let me try….”
[Matt makes an attempt at using half the bow for each note]
Matt: “OK, play it like that, but not ugly.”
[C. makes another attempt, not ugly, slightly more bow than before but less than Matt used]
Matt: “Yeah, it’s better, but not strong enough yet. What do the others think?”
[Michael, having restrained himself for the previous exchange, gleefully pipes up:]
Michael: “I think I want to be WET WITH BOW.”
