We’re back!

8bb’s back to the grind. We played in gorgeous, GORGEOUS Santa Fe last week, and we have a crazy new season of various highjinks coming up.

Check out our newly posted schedule for all the details, but here are some highlights:

  • The World Premiere performances of Jennifer Higdon’s Concerto for 8bb and orchestra with the Atlanta Symphony on June 3, 5 and 6!
  • A mini-tour of Eckert/Mackey Slide taking in Chicago, Richmond and Maryland during March
  • Our first home-town performance of our crazy new Pierrot Lunaire production, at the Harris Theater in Chicago
  • A residency and concert at the Curtis School of Music
  • First 8bb performances of some fabulous pieces: Mark-Anthony Turnage’s balls-to-the-wall Grazioso!, Bent Sorensen’s otherworldly Deserted Churchyards, Mayke Nas’ funky Twelve Hands, Marc Mellits’ Spam and Pierre Boulez’s wall-of-trills Derive 1
  • The return to an old favorite 8bb piece, Critical Moments 2, to honor the life and work of George Perle
  • Debuts in a bunch of places, including Winnipeg (Canada), and performances and residencies across the country (KY, AL, GA, PA, IL, NY, OH, CA, MN, MD, VA)

This week is a busy one. On Thursday and Friday we will be recording Steve Reich’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Double Sextet with Judy Sherman, in the presence of the composer. We will in essence be recording two pieces, as there are two sextet parts that are heard simultaneously, so that’ll no doubt be an interesting process for all concerned… Look out for a session report next week.
